April 21, 2025
An ABC Landline feature highlights the growing scientific interest in the Australian-bred Queen Garnet plum, developed in Queensland and renowned for its exceptionally high levels of anthocyanins. Researchers from the University of Wollongong, the University of Queensland and Victoria University are investigating the plum’s potential to support brain health and delay the onset of dementia.
Early-stage studies show promising results, with laboratory research indicating that Queen Garnet plum extract may help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation, while also supporting the formation of new neural connections linked to memory. Scientists are also exploring the relationship between gut and brain health, examining how gut microbiota convert anthocyanins into bioactive compounds that may enhance cognitive function.
The feature also notes increasing global interest in the plum, including attention from actor Chris Hemsworth, who is exploring dementia prevention in an upcoming documentary series. Nutrafruit, the company responsible for commercialising the Queen Garnet plum, is continuing to expand its reach into international markets.
